I am also a beginner in AI but I hope I can be of some help. I am reading the following book to get a complete view of AI:
Artificial intelligence A modern approach
by Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig
Prentice Hall series in Artificial intelligence
ISBN 0-13-103805-2
It is a good book to get started in my opinion, although its content can be theoritical for a true programmer.
The following website is also a good start:
http://ai-depot.com/Main.html
It has some interesting articles to get you started.
I think the following AI topics are interesting to a programmer:
- neural networks
- evolutionary algorithms or genetical algorithms
- state machines
- turing machines
- knowledge or expert systems
I wish you good luck and have lots of fun.
