Subject: Intelligent software agents - pure hype or real stuff?

Hi, What is the current status of the intelligent software agent technology? What are the most important discoveries and milestones of the field? What will be the killer app? I have been following the intelligent software agent technology for some time. From my personal point of view, it is very interesting field and consept, and I would really like to see and use applications based on agent technology. Unfortunately, I have had an impression that instead of real progress there are just a bunch of fuzzy terms (self-awareness, proactiveness, goal-oriented, etc) and some applications that really do not meet the original expectations. For example, so called agent communication languages have been available for years. Have anyone implemented an agent that uses any of the languages? I mean really take advantage of the paradigm, not just replace the RMI or IIOP with a fancy mark-up language. In fact, that is my point: I'm afraid that many (or most) of agent applications are same old basic stuff wrapped with nice agent metaphor. Please, update my knowledge and prove that I'm wrong. -e-
